Advanced Searching

You can search by title, artist or album by either Freeform, Exact or Using Wild-cards

(All searches are case insensitive - 'Sting' or 'sting' will give the same results)

Example: Searching for a song title with the word 'heart' in the title

a. Freeform - Gives all tracks with the word 'heart' in the title. Type 'heart' and press enter or search (do not tick the exact or wildcard box). Note: with freeform searching you could type in 'heart and love'

b. Exact - Gives all tracks titled 'heart'. Type 'heart' and tick the 'Exact or wild-card' box and press enter or search. (eg'Heart by The Petshop Boys')

c. Wild-card Searching

If you want the first word in the title to begin with 'heart'. Type 'heart%' and tick the 'exact or wild-card' box (eg Heartbreak Hotel, Heart of Stone)

If you want the last word in the title to be 'heart'. Type '%heart' and tick the 'wild-card' box (eg Undeveloped Heart, Rebel Heart)

If you want 'heart' or any words containing 'heart'. Type '%heart%' and tick the 'wild-card' box (eg I Sold My Heart To The Junkman)

Using the same principles for artist, the following are worth noting:

a. 'Diana Ross%' (with wild-card box ticked) would give songs by Diana Ross and Diana Ross and The Supremes and Diana Ross and The Supremes and The Temptations

b. 'Rod Stewart%' (with wild-card box ticked) would give songs sung by Rod Stewart and Rod Stewart and Tina Turner.

c. 'Sting%' (with wild-card box ticked) would give songs sung by Sting and Sting and The Police

d. '%Sting' (with wild-card box ticked) would give songs sung by Julio Inglesias with Sting

Exact or wild-card box

  1. To change from freeform searching to exact, tick the 'Exact or wild-card' box.
  2. If you are using wildcards ('%' or '_') always tick the 'Exact or wild-card' box.

Seaching by Genre

Highlight the genre or genres of interest and press enter or search.

Searching by Release Date

Enter the dates of interest, eg 'from' 1950 'to' 1960 and press enter or click search.

If you want songs with a release date after 2000, put 2000 in the 'from' year and leave the 'to' year blank). Press Enter or Click Search.

Reset Button

If you are refining your search, try adding the additional criteria. To clear all fields, press the reset button.

Displaying Results

Once you have your results, they can be displayed alphabetically by either Song Title, Artist or Album Title by simply clicking on either 'Song Title', 'Artist Name' or 'Album Title' at the top of the Results Page and they will be displayed alphabetically (A-Z). If you want the results displayed (Z-A) click on the field a second time and they will reverse.

General Skipping About

Every Field (Song Title, Artist, Album Title) on the result pages, detail pages or library cart pages can be clicked to skip to search for further songs using the exact contents of the field. The best help is to try 'skipping about'.

Cross Reference Code

After a search the first icon on the right is leads to a details page. Click here to see the details of the song. At the bottom is a cross-reference code which refers to another database (eg the Song Code from another Song database). Clicking on this field will display other recordings with the same cross-reference code in the Digital Music Library.

Library Cart

After displaying the results of a search, tracks can be added to a cart (before adding to the cart, make sure it is empty from previous results). Add the tracks you want to the cart. These results can be saved and subsequently retrieved. The results can be saved and retrieved from the Digital Music Library or saved to a local drive as an Excel Spreadsheet. Once saved as an Excel spreadsheet, this can then be e-mailed, to colleagues or clients. Tracks can be removed from the Cart by clicking the remove icon next to the track to be removed.

Audition, Download and Details Buttons

When reviewing the results in a cart or from any results page, you can look at the details (click details button), audition a track (click audition button), audition all tracks as a playlist (click audition all button), download track (click download button). When downloading from the server, you can save the audio file to your local drive.
